Directory: Minerals-Russian-Uvarovite Records from 1 to 8 Total 19 |
Uvarovite was found in Saranovskaya Mine, Perm Region, the Ural Mnts, Russia in 19th century.
Since then it is the major source of sparkling green garnet. This unique color is imparted to Uvarovite by chromium ions. Only Ural Mnts Uvarovite is translucent and has perfect luster. Fine druzy uvarovite looks wonderfully in silver or gold jewelry. Uvarovite crystals are hexaoctahedral, usual size 1 to 3 mm, 5 mm crystals are extremely rare. Uvarovite is deposited in the top level of Saranovskaya Mine which is nearly exhausted by now. Further extraction of chromium rich mineral Chromate takes place entirely in the deep levels of the mine that carry no Uvarovite. So, no new Uvarovite specimens will appear for many years to come which makes Saranovskaya Mine the classical locality. |
